About this Session:

In a world rich with resources about leadership, self-help, management, and marketing, we began to wrestle with the word that defines our industry: agency. But what does agency really mean? What does it mean for us as individuals, for our work, and for our families? Can we reframe the importance of agency in our hearts and imaginations? Wrestling with these questions has been a cornerstone of our work for nearly fifteen years.“Agency” is a word often taken for granted. Practicing agency requires balancing tensions of purpose, expertise, advocacy, and ambition.

Phil Sanders

HIGHS & LOWS

First and foremost, Phil is a family man. He has been a husband to Anna for 15 years and a father to three amazing little kiddos: Ollie [10], Emmett [7], and Marigold [2]. Kinda started over with that last one :)

Phil has been an entrepreneur since 2010. Out of pure boredom with the corporate world of Starbucks and an inability to understand risk, he launched Three Pennies, a photography and graphic design business. Since then, he’s owned Foster, a co-working space for creative solo-entrepreneurs, and Citizen Supply, a brick-and-mortar marketplace for small DTC-only brands.

He’s seen the highs as he grew his retail business, Citizen Supply, to $3.5 million in its first three years with an amazing team and hundreds of thousands of customers. He’s also experienced real lows as he went through losing it all during the pandemic and ultimately going through bankruptcy.

Now, Phil spends his time helping creative entrepreneurs and retail business owners find more confidence, satisfaction, and sustainability in their businesses.
